Ess 3 - Interpreting an organic form.

Breaking down an organic object into geometrical shapes to develope a flat pattern turns out to be harder than it sounds. it's rather easy to model an stretched spherical object in 3d - draw spline and rotate emboss - but having to create each indivual face turns out to be a lot more laborous and complicated exercise. but it worked out in the end so that's ok i suppose.

Ess 2. The 'HourGlass' cardboard step! thingy..

Dimesions:
Height - 200mm
Seat - 130 x 130mm
Thickness - 2mm

Tested strenght - 100kg aprox.
Starting with rather awful sketches, i eventually after multiple ideas and attempts with various paper weights, setteled with a final design. i only wanted to use one sheet of card and instead make a step/stool rather than a platform. eventually decided a thicker more rigid material was needed to minimise the number of folds, slotting and cutting so not to over engineer the piece.

"Flexible Love" Folding Chair

check this youtube vid for a better idea of what it is.

this chair absolutely ridiculous! and yet awesome at the same time.. somewhat puzzled about how they're connected together... i suspect it's like a massive accordion. wonder how comfortable it is to sit on? i doubt it is all that much. perhaps a higher back would make it a more practical chair. but untill then it's a great novelty item.

Esquisse one_1

The sphere is made up of a series of interlocking ribs spaced evenly to create a stonge solid frame.
The pyramid was the most fiddly to put together. Tabs with slits in them connect each face to the adjacent side to create a consistent clean form.

The cube folds together with several tabs with interlocking slits joining on the inside creating an almost double thick wall for a stronger stucture.
